Obituary for James Ackeret

James H. Ackeret, 92, Hollidaysburg, passed away Thursday after a long-term illness. He was born in Medford, Wis., son of the late Jacob and Louisa (Schaff) Ackeret. Surviving are his wife, Helene E. (Wade) Ackeret; a daughter, Nancy (Ackeret) McKenna and husband, Edward, of Huntington, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Claire (Ackeret) Habel and husband, Eric, of Henrico, Va., and Rachel (Ackeret) O’Dwyer and husband, Paul, of Haslet, Texas; three great-grandchildren: James Habel and Hugh and Eleanor O’Dwyer; a sister, Germaine (Ackeret) Sufras; a daughter-in-law, Carole Puglisi of Fairfax, Va.; and two siblings-in-law: George and Gloria Zakem. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betsy Ackeret on May 3, 2002; a son, James R. Ackeret in July 2014; and nine siblings. James graduated from Medford High School, Medford, Wis., and then the University of Wisconsin where he played football and baseball. For 13 years, he was a pro-baseball player, and later he was employed at Small Tube Products, Hollidaysburg. He was a member of St. George Orthodox Church, Altoona, and, more recently, First Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg. He enjoyed bridge and he loved all sports, especially golf. He was a member of Park Hills Country Club for many years. He was also past president of Lakemont Lions, and he was an active Shriner for many years. Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
